Mathematics in the City: Learning Through Urban Exploration
The 6th grade students at Colegio Juan de Lanuza have taken part in a Mathematical Route through the centre of Zaragoza, an activity within the City Council’s programme, Zaragoza Through Other Eyes, designed to reveal how mathematics is present in everyday urban spaces.
Guided by specialised monitors, students observed geometric shapes, symmetries, building numbering, architectural proportions, and the role of mathematics in urban planning, recording their findings in field journals.
This experiential approach allows students to develop key competences such as:
- Critical observation
- Problem solving
- Logical reasoning
- Real-world application of curricular content
At Juan de Lanuza, we promote active methodologies that connect learning with the environment, incorporating computational thinking, STEAM education, and a human-centred approach to technology and data analysis.
An enriching experience that turns the city into a classroom and curiosity into the engine of learning.
